At road.cc, every product has been thoroughly tested, as long as you can correctly understand its working conditions. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists and we believe they are objective. Although we strive to ensure that the opinions expressed are supported by facts, the comments are essentially an informed opinion, not a final ruling. We will not deliberately try to destroy anything (except locks), but we do try to find any weaknesses in the design. The total score is not just the average of the other scores: it reflects the function and value of the product-the value depends on how the product compares with items of similar specifications, quality, and price.

Good grades are more common than bad, because fortunately good products are more common than bad.

The Rivelo Thorncombe soft shell jacket is warm and versatile, with a removable insulation layer, which means it can work well in a wide temperature range. It also keeps you dry in the shower, although it is not the most breathable, and the shape and fit are not suitable for everyone.

The soft shell jacket is mainly made of recycled polyester, with 10k water resistance and 20k breathability. I found the fabric to be soft inside and snug and comfortable, even though I did wear a sweatshirt or base shirt underneath.

It can easily cope with light rain-this is certainly enough for the typical drizzle you encounter in the UK from autumn to spring-but for continuous heavy rain, you need to provide more protection.

Like many cycling jackets, Thorncombe has a hem at the back designed to protect you from road spray. It does, but it is very extreme, it actually feels too big and floats around. I prefer the jacket to be of regular length, or at least you can choose to open the flap.

I was deeply impressed by the warmth of this jacket. I used it in a cycling environment of 4 to 12°C and used insulating materials, and it can cope with it without any problems, although I do feel a little sweaty when I put in more effort. 'OCTA Active Insulation' is detachable and connected by internal poppers around the shoulders and chest.

Removing it will make the jacket more like a long-sleeved sweatshirt, increasing its range of working in a wider range of temperatures. I want to say that the insulation material can make a difference of 3-4°C at most.

This jacket has the usual three back pockets, plus a zippered side pocket. I found that the two outer pockets at the back were a bit too shallow-my iPhone 11 or mini water pump would stick out of the top of the pocket, and it didn't feel as safe as I wanted.

The main zipper has a very large-almost bulky-double Vislon zipper, which means it can also be pulled from the waist. I did not find any need for this feature, because opening the bottom zipper will only make the jacket flutter in the wind.

The front of the jacket is cut short, roughly at the height of the navel, and the back of the jacket is particularly long. The length of the sleeves is appropriate to ensure that there is no gap between the sleeves and the gloves for cold air to pass through.

Rivelo claims that this jacket has a "slim fit"-if you want to wear a few layers underneath, it is even recommended to increase the size-but it doesn't feel like this on me, especially when compared to other soft shells I wear. Compare. I tested the medium size and found it loosened around the chest, shoulders and arms; I would prefer something tighter. But I have to say that my body is thin, so I might be more suitable for people with wider shoulders.

No complaints about style: Rivero offers jackets in two colors, red/navy and navy/red. I think I prefer the navy blue look, but the red I tested looks good with a black bib.

The retail price of Thorncombe Softshell is 160 pounds, which seems expensive compared to some products. For example, Paul’s highly rated dhb Aeron All Winter Softshell jacket is priced at 130 pounds, while Iwein is particularly impressed with Stolen Goat’s Mekon Climb & Conquer winter jacket, priced at 149.99 pounds.

You can spend more money-Rapha's Pro Team winter jacket costs 180 pounds, but Robin was impressed by its insulation and breathability, and he also liked its fit.

Overall, Rivero Thorncombe has some powerful features, including removable insulating materials, which increase warmth and versatility. If the tailoring suits you, you can consider-although you can buy a similar tailoring for less.

A warm and versatile cycling jacket, but the fit may be looser than you expect

Brand and model: Rivelo Thorncombe soft shell jacket

Tell us the purpose and target audience of this jacket. What is the manufacturer's comment on this? How does this compare to your own feelings?

This soft shell jacket is aimed at road cyclists who are looking for a jacket to keep warm in the winter and early seasons. The uniqueness of the jacket is the detachable internal insulation material, which provides good warmth and can be quickly removed to use as a long-sleeved sweatshirt. Rivelo noted that this jersey is designed to be worn like a jersey, with a bottom layer underneath, and a slim fit. Although I found the fit is very loose, and I do not recommend further adjustments to the size.

Rivelo said: "The powerful and lightweight soft shell fabric is as comfortable as a sweatshirt, while having the protection and performance of a jacket. When you are not sure about the weather, the detachable OCTA active insulation lining provides great flexibility. Snap it in for warmth and comfort, and remove it after you warm up. The waterproof outer fabric is made of recycled polyester, PFC-free DWR, as part of our promotion of a more sustainable and environmentally friendly series.

'This jacket is slim cut and designed to be worn like a jersey, with a bottom layer or minimal layer underneath. If you plan to wear it as a jacket (on a sweatshirt or on multiple layers), we recommend that you are one size larger than your usual size.

Tell us more about the technical aspects of the jacket?

PFC-free DWR coating helps improve water resistance

Stretch thermal knit underarm panels contribute to freedom of movement and breathability

3 large pockets with elasticated openings on the back

The reflector at the back pocket increases low-light visibility

The hem of the rear hem prevents road splashes

Full length 2-way Vislon zipper with zipper garage and protection

Webbing zipper pull for easy opening

Inclined collar lined with soft microfiber fabric for comfort and weather protection

Articulated sleeve paneling, suitable for "cycling"

Soft ribbed ribbon back neck loop

No rough label-care label stitched flat

It seems to be well made, and the main fabric of the jacket is of good quality. The articulated sleeve design provides a good sleeve length when holding the handlebar.

This jacket is beautiful and warm, especially the insulation is in place, if not the most breathable.

I have used this jacket on several winter and early spring rides without any signs of problems. The spray on the trail is easy to wipe off.

The waterproof rating of 10k indicates that the jacket can withstand short periods of rain. I agree that it can cope with light rain or drizzle. I don't want to wear it for a long time or in heavy rain.

The breathability is rated at 20k, which should allow a reasonable amount of air to escape from the jacket, but I find that if I work hard or deal with longer climbs, it will sweat. When worn without insulation, breathability will definitely increase.

Personally, I find the fit is loose. As a cyclist with a height of 178 cm and a weight of 69 kg, the medium jacket does not provide a "slim fit" as advertised by Rivero.

Taking Rivelo as an example of a cyclist whose height and waist are the same as me, I tested the medium size. The size of the jacket is correct-the length of the arms and torso are good-but see "Fit" above.

The weight of the jacket is 377 grams, which is quite good compared to the competition. Weight is not a major factor for me, because other performance characteristics are more important in winter jackets, but Rapha and dhb offer similar soft shell jackets that weigh about 390 grams.

Removal of insulation material can save approximately 50 grams.

My only comfort problem is that the back hem is too long.

How easy is this jacket to maintain? What was the reaction after being washed?

Similar to other cycling suits, it can be machine washed at 30 degrees and can be dried at low temperatures. It is also easy to wipe off the spatter on the road with a damp cloth.

Tell us how the jacket performs as a whole when used for its design purpose

The main purpose of this jacket is to keep you warm and provide slight waterproofing, and it performs well in these areas. However, it is not like some breathable, "performance fit" is looser than I expected.

Tell us what you particularly like about this jacket

I like the warm, detachable insulation material is a nice feature that makes the jacket versatile.

Tell us what you don't particularly like about this jacket

I don't like its fit-I found it too loose around the chest, arms and shoulders. The two back pockets are also too shallow for my phone and mini pump.

How does the price compare to similar products on the market (including products tested recently on road.cc)?

It's a bit expensive: the dhb Aeron All Winter Softshell Jacket costs 130 pounds, and the Mekon Climb & Conquer winter jacket from Stolen Goat costs 149.99 pounds. Rapha's Pro Team Winter Jacket is priced higher, priced at 180 pounds, but Robin was impressed by its thermal insulation and breathability, and he also liked its fit.

Use this box to explain your total score

The Rivelo Thorncombe softshell jacket has many advantages, but for me there are also some disadvantages. The main feature of the jacket is to keep warm, and it performs well in this regard, but I prefer my cycling jerseys to fit more closely. I scored 6 points for "above average" because the price is also a bit high, the pockets are a bit shallow, and the back is too long.

Great for many British winter rides and attractive prices
